The knights of the Order of the Black Tortoise specialize in maximum defense, while still optimizing offensive strength. Inspired by the legendary beast of the eastern nations, the Black Tortoise, these warriors are masters of using the Carapace Lance -- a weapon that is balanced between offense and defense.

The Carapace Lance is primarily a thrusting weapon, with customizable "heads" -- the tip of the weapon. These heads range from the typical pointed lance head, to more specialized variants like a drill head and a snapper head. The sheer weight of the weapon also makes it ideal for crushing lightly armored foes.

The defining feature of the Carapace Lance is the ability of its outer platings to expand into a sheild-like contraption, the "carapace". When deployed, the carapace can effectively protect the vital parts of its weilder from scout-fire. The plates of the carapace are normally crafted from iron, but high ranking knights are commonly issued with lances with plates made of terratanium, a valuable impervious material. None but the strongest magic can pierce this defense. It is this defensive aspect of a Black Tortoise Knight that makes them ideal team members, especially in escort missions, and protecting valuable sorcerers during battle.

The Carapace Lance itself is heavy to carry into battle, and so the Black Tortoise Knights are not typically fitted with full armor. Rather, royal engineers and alchemists have devised gigantic armlets that not only protect its wearer, but also aid in lifting and weilding the gigantic Carapace Lance.
